Experience in Treating Wastewater from Alcohol and Ethanol Production: What Businesses Should Know

1. Characteristics of Alcohol & Ethanol Wastewater

BOD5: 2,000 – 10,000 mg/L
COD: 3,000 – 12,000 mg/L
SS: 300 – 1,000 mg/L
Contains fermentation residues, leftover alcohol, unconverted starch, etc.
pH typically ranges from 3.5 to 5.5 (mildly acidic)

Note: If discharged untreated, alcohol wastewater can rapidly deplete dissolved oxygen in receiving bodies (rivers, ponds, canals), generate foul odors, and harm aquatic life.

2. Choosing the Right Treatment Process: Practical Insights

Selecting a suitable treatment system requires matching the organic load, flow rate, and discharge requirements. Below is an effective multi-stage treatment process commonly used:

Step 1: Preliminary Treatment – Screening & Flotation

  • Remove suspended solids and fermentation residues using bar screens, primary sedimentation, or Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF).

  • If grease and oil are present, include a grease trap or oil separator.

Step 2: Anaerobic Biological Treatment

  • Due to high COD, anaerobic treatment is essential.

  • The UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) tank removes 60–85% of COD efficiently.

  • Biogas generated during this process can be reused as an energy source.

Step 3: Aerobic Biological Treatment

  • After anaerobic treatment, wastewater enters Aerotank or MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) systems to further reduce BOD, COD, and ammonia.

  • Fine bubble diffusers and blowers help enhance oxygen transfer and biological activity.

Step 4: Filtration and Disinfection

  • Use sedimentation tanks, pressure filters, and chlorine/UV disinfection to ensure treated water meets Vietnam's QCVN 40:2011/BTNMT Column A or B discharge standards.

3. Important Operational Tips

✔ Maintain stable flow and organic load to avoid shocking the biological system
✔ Adjust pH to 6.5–7.5 before biological treatment
✔ Monitor sludge concentration and microbial activity
Avoid discharging harsh chemicals or detergents into the system to protect microorganisms

4. Cost & Efficiency Considerations

Investment cost depends on the flow and chosen technologies (typically ranges from 300 to 1,500 million VND for 50–200 m³/day)
Low operating cost if biogas is reused
Treatment efficiency: Up to 90%+ BOD and COD removal, ensuring safe discharge
